ABSTRACT

The spreading of short-term flat rentals has brought about changes in the accommodation market, often seen as a threat to traditional accommodation providers. This is particularly true in large cities which have a considerable accommodation capacity and also a large stock of flats. The aim is to indicate to what extent short-term rentals are influencing the tourist accommodation market in Warsaw. The idea behind the study is the assumption that the differences revealed between those using hotels or such flats will provide an answer to the question of the influence of the latter on Warsaw»s tourist market. Such information should be useful in the marketing activities of interested parties and in the policies of the city authorities. Analysis of the data from a survey carried out in 2021 using the CHAID decision tree indicates that the choice of accommodation type was mainly determined by situational variables. The only statistically significant demographic predictor relates to a greater interest in flats among those aged up to 34 years old. Planned expenditure per person per overnight stay proved to be a statistically significant predictor only for non-residents of Poland, with the cut-off amount set higher than the median interval for this segment. Flats were more often chosen by people travelling in a larger party or alone and those planning to stay longer than four nights, thus looking for a different offer than that of traditional city hotels. © 2023, Lodz University Press. ABSTRACT

Inaccurate promotional information about tourist destinations may result in tourists' negative evaluations. This study proposes a new approach to measure the congruence between projected and received images of a destination's attractions. Based on online textual data, this study investigates how image congruence influences tourists' evaluations of their destination experiences. Using promotional messages and reviews of attractions in Hainan, China obtained from a leading Chinese online travel agency (Ctrip) and a three-way fixed-effects regression model, this study demonstrates that image congruence positively affects tourists' appraisal of their destination experiences. External crises (e.g., the COVID-19 pandemic), the readability of promotional messages, and tourists' expertise moderate this relationship, reducing the positive impact of image congruence on tourist experience evaluation. This study bridges theoretical and empirical gaps in destination image (in)congruence research, informing tourism marketing agencies of effective promotional strategies in different contexts. © 2023

ABSTRACT

This study examines six antecedent constructs affecting potential Australian tourists' destination image of Fiji. Data were collected from 416 respondents and analysed using covariance-based structural equation modelling. Results revealed that five constructs–impressions of Fiji, trust in the Fijian government, crisis management, solidarity, and COVID-19 mitigation practices–were positively associated with respondents' cognitive and affective destination image formation. Xenophobia also moderates the positive association between cognitive and conative images. These findings contribute theoretically to understanding salient constructs contributing to destination image formation amidst the pandemic. Study insights will be useful to practitioners in developing effective marketing strategies and tourism recovery. © 2023 Asia Pacific Tourism Association.

ABSTRACT

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is an attractive tourist destination with diverse and unique experiences, in which Vietnam is considered one of the most famous destinations in this region. Quality evaluations and strategies for attracting international tourists are being thoroughly researched. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has had the most significant impact on the tourism industry, which has suffered greatly. Therefore, the recovery and expansion of international tourism necessitate the employment of tourism-related businesses and service sector workers. Extensive research must be conducted to identify solutions and new directions to recover the international tourist market's growth as quickly as possible. This study identifies the factors that influence the destination of international visitors visiting Vietnam after the COVID-19 pandemic by modifying and evaluating the scales of the theoretical model. Using the convenience sampling technique, data were collected through interviews with 208 international visitors, with 29 observed variables. Using SPSS 22.0, five factors influencing international visitors' decisions to visit Vietnam were revealed: tourist motivation, tourist attitude, destination image, social media, and environmental quality. Finally, the authors provide policy recommendations to enhance the allure and viability of Vietnam's tourism following the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study's outcome is intended to establish the importance of the many variables influencing the choice of destination for international visitors. © 2022 by the authors.

ABSTRACT

This study marks an early attempt to evaluate staycation incentive programs initiated by local authorities. It aims to gauge the effectiveness of staycation programs in cultivating learning opportunities and restorative benefits with an emphasis on temporal positive psychological outcomes amid this continuing pandemic. Relying on a survey-based research design, we conducted a survey with 409 local tourists in Macau, where a recent staycation initiative has attained prominent success. We then undertook the structural equation modeling test using AMOS. Results show how short local excursions could still fortify one's psychological capital with respect to ephemeral improvement in hope, confidence, optimism, and resilience in the face of extenuating circumstances. By synthesizing a path leading from COVID-related distress to fortification of a more prepared mental state for the new normal through the staycation's experiential benefits, this study thus puts forth a mechanism that explains why tourists/residents engage in staycation programs, as well as illuminating the psychological values associated with such activities. By answering these questions, this research improvises a three-stage process that identifies pre-trip, during-trip, and post-trip mental encounters that improve participants' psychological capabilities, even if only temporarily. The present inquiry sheds light on a new form of sustainability: mental (or psychological) sustainability. © 2021 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

ABSTRACT

This study discusses the application of Doxey's irritation index in the face of existential crises. Building on the COVID-19 pandemic, data was collected at two time points (prior to the crisis and after the first wave). Our two sequences of data show that residents' attitudes are by no means fixed, with perceptions of overcrowding bouncing back and concerns about reduced economic benefits. In an attempt to develop ample descriptions of emerging concerns during existential crises, three archetypes of residents are identified and displayed using alluvial diagrams: (a) advocates of positive tourism impacts;(b) demanders of sustainable tourism;and (c) boycotters of further tourism developments. Theory is complemented by recalibrating the irritation index with an empirically-grounded existential crisis perspective that demonstrates shifting attitudinal patterns and provides grounds for discussions on the progress of Doxey's irritation index. © 2022 The Authors

ABSTRACT

The new global context has heightened the need for the sustainable mobility and recovery of the tourism industry. This study analyses how travel bubbles can contribute towards the sustainability and reconstruction of the tourism industry. Several examples have emerged worldwide, manifesting the strong need to create ‘safe' routes to transform tourism. Through a theoretical approach and by drawing from previous research, official reports, and news media, this study analyses the rationale for travel bubbles and examines how they can support short-term responses to the pandemic and enhance long-term planning pertaining to tourism mobility for a sustainable future. It discusses the political, economic, psychological, socioeconomic, environmental, and hygiene impacts of travel bubbles. The study shows that sustainability can be achieved through a cooperative regional approach. It examines the challenges and opportunities of travel bubbles towards redeveloping tourism in neighbouring destinations and offers strategies to support sustainable tourism during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as backyard tourism. © 2021 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

ABSTRACT

Chinese tourists have essential economic and cultural exchange values for Thai tourism. The present research on Chinese tourists traveling to Thailand (CTTT) has made a significant breakthrough, but it rarely observes the research status quo, hot spots, and the future based on bibliometric methods and visualization technology. Based on 710 articles on the Web of Science (WoS), Cite Space visualization technology was used to analyze the publishing trend of CTTT, authors, institutions, countries, keywords, and categories, and build a knowledge map about CTTT. The study found that although the positive trend of published articles indicates excellent future development, the overall number of published articles is not ideal. Moreover, research on this topic has made significant progress and breakthroughs in the healthcare field, meaning that there is still much research space in the business and economic areas. Thai institutions and scientific research institutions and their scholars have significantly contributed to CTTT. They focus more on healthcare, disease, health, sexual safety, and equality in travel. Although there is an increasing focus on consumer behavior, habits, and models, However, the research on CTTT under the background of the digital economy, sharing economy, big data, artificial intelligence, and the COVID-19 pandemic is of great research value. Therefore, this study encourages different countries, institutions, and scholars to do more on this topic. Furthermore, interdisciplinary research is even more critical. © 2022.

ABSTRACT

In order to find a coordinated approach to support tourism recovery following the impacts of COVID-19, this research examines the experiences of mainland China, the first country whose domestic tourism recovered in the first stage (the first year after the pandemic outbreak). Through the content analysis of tourism policy documents at national, provincial, and city levels, we generated the features of the policy responses from the supply and demand sides, and the policy trends before and after the first peak of the recovery. Next, we summarized the three steps which make up the first stage, and describe the effective policy focus for each step. This process-oriented policy analysis can guide other countries in how to cope with tourism recovery during the first stage.

ABSTRACT

Drive tourism is cited to become a major part of the road map to recover the South African tourism industry in the post-Covid era. Even before the pandemic, the South African tourism industry was subjected to serious setbacks. The implementation of stricter visa requirements to curtail child trafficking had the unintended effect of an R886m loss in direct tourism spending. Xenophobic attacks and political turmoil also contributed to an ailing tourism industry. As the tourism industry started to recover at the beginning of 2020, the Covid pandemic caused economic havoc worldwide. The industry was hit hard by the lockdowns and shed more than 300 000 jobs in South Africa during this time. As the world vaccinated and started to adjust to living with the virus, a recovery plan for the South African tourism industry is urgently needed. A worldwide trend suggests that countries are jump-starting their tourism industries by focusing on the regeneration of their domestic tourism markets. While social distancing is still recommended, drive tourism has become the ideal vehicle of recovery that will enable tourists to travel freely and safely. In order to properly implement drive tourism as a dynamo of economic activity, this study aims to conduct a systematic literature review on international and domestic drive tourism research. Making use of a conceptual research design, this study further aims (1) to understand the focus of drive tourism research on an international level;(2) to identify studies on drive tourism already undertaken in South Africa;and (3) to identify the research gaps in drive tourism studies in South Africa. Establishing a theoretical framework of existing knowledge will reveal the extent of the lack of research in drive tourism and hopefully create a better understanding of the significant opportunities in the South African drive tourism market © 2022 AJHTL /Author(s)

ABSTRACT

Motivation: Information and knowledge are economic goods that sustain economic development, including the tourism industry, today. In the past, the tourism sector was affected by various crises, but none of them was as extensive and impacted tourism on a global scale as it has happened now - during the Covid-19 pandemic. Generation Z, which is a cohort of extremely active travelers, mostly rely on digitally-delivered information. New media like the Internet, including social media, enable tourism entities to reach not only local, but also global markets. However, in the studies published so far, social media and the Internet have usually been analyzed as one category, which in the era of changing technologies and the new emerging behaviors of young tourists seems insufficient. Therefore, there is a need to verify the current state of research and determine the new media utility on the tourism market. Aim: The study aims to investigate the capability of new media to meet the information needs of potential Gen Z tourists during the pandemic and to identify the characteristics of useful media information Results: The study involved a desk research and a diagnostic survey method, including the online survey technique. The collected material was analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. 374 responses were received to the questionnaire. The study was conducted in October 2020. Additionally, an observation, carried out in thematic groups in social media, was used as a complementary technique. The conducted research made it possible to verify the utility of online sources of information used by Gen Z respondents during the pandemic. The study determined the relationships between Gen Z travel frequency, average daily time spent in front of the computer, the amount of tourism expenditure and the utility of new media. The main contribution of this study is the identification of the features of useful media-delivered information about tourism products and services as perceived by Gen Z representatives, which contributes to filling the existing research gap.

ABSTRACT

This article aims to study tourism supply and demand as determining factors in the marketing of tourism products in the destination Manta, Ecuador affected by the earthquake of April 16, 2016 and recently by the coronavirus (COVID-19), which originated from March 16, 2020, to decree the state of exception in Ecuador in order to contain the transmission of the virus. The methodology begins with the study of the tourist offer that allows identifying the problems that affect the business sector. A questionnaire is used to collect data, shared online through google forms, which establishes the objective of identifying problems in the tourism business sector in the face of the crisis caused by COVID-19, in the search for incentives and possible marketing strategies. The questionnaire was answered by 272 managers of tourist establishments, which represent 48% of the total tourist plant registered in the cadasters;the information was processed in the statistical program SPSS version 23. Subsequently, the demand study was carried out to identify the tourist motivations that promote the trip and assess the behavior in the consumption of tourist products and services. The segmentation showed two clusters: cultural-archaeological tourism and sun and beach tourism, which show significant differences in the motivations of the trip, the relationship with the product or service, destination evaluation and loyalty. The results show various relationships as main marketing strategies, oriented on the one hand to actions of the authorities, to improve the city's tourism management model and actions of the sector, to the improvement of health and biosecurity processes in the tourist establishments, lower service rates, promotion on social networks and the migration of companies to online models.
